Three years after they released "Zooropa," U2 finally released "Pop," another major musical change. Bono said they decided on the title "Pop" because of the increasing popularity of pop music even though their music did not necessarily fit into the category.

The music is a combination of the techno-style of "Zooropa" and the traditional alternative rock from earlier U2 albums. While not considered U2's best album, Pop topped charts in many countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.

Many of the songs on this album were intended for the previous album but the band felt they weren't suitable for release at the time. The song "Miami" was recorded when the band had to have a photo shoot in Miami. The song "Please" was written about the Northern Ireland peace process, which was still an issue at the time.
