U2 decided to return to the Windmill Lanes Studio
in Dublin and to their producer Steve Lillywhite to record their
seventh album "The Joshua Tree." Bono describes the
choice of the cover's desert theme as being appropriate because
of the mysterious tone of the album. It also reminded him of
many of the ghost-like towns that moved him in Europe.
Bono's experiences in Latin America, and seeing the Matres,
mothers of murdered and missing children in Argentina, inspired
him to write the songs "Mothers Of The Disappeared."
"Bullet in the Sky" depicts the band's disapproval
of the United States' decision to arm rebels in El Salvador.
The song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
is about Bono's own struggles with his faith and temptation.
"One Tree Hill" is a tribute to a friend of the band
who died in 1986.
"Joshua Tree" was a number one chart topper in 22
countries and the fastest-selling album in U.K. history. It
won Album of the Year in 1988 and was #26 in Rolling Stone
Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time. It was also
#6 on the Contemporary Christian Music Magazine's
Greatest Albums list--the second U2 album to make it. The Joshua
Tree tour was also the first tour to provide information about
Amnesty International to concertgoers and expressed U2's support
of it.
