In
2004, U2 released their fifteenth album "How to Dismantle
an Atomic Bomb." Similar to the manner of their previous
album, U2 strips down the stadium-sized approach of past albums.
"How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" garnered eight Grammy Awards
in 2005 and 2006 , winning in all of the categories in which
it was nominated. The album was also number one in thirty four
countries, including the United States. It was awarded Album
of the Year in 2006 and Best Rock Album. Songs have received
awards as well. "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own"
won Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group
with Vocal. "City of Blinding Lights" was awarded
Best Rock Song. In 2005 "Vertigo", the signature song
of the album, won in all categories in which it was nominated:
Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with
Vocal, and Best Short Form Music Video.
Bono has described the album as "our first rock and roll
record." Most of the music on the record deals with world
issues and the themes of love, war, peace and harmony. The song
"Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own" is a tribute
to Bono's father, Bob Hewson, who died in 2001. Bono also dedicated
"Original of the Species" to his two daughters because it is
about growing up and being true to one's self.
The album reached number one in 28 countries, but only got up
to number three in the United States. Both "Beautiful Day"
and "Walk On" won Record of the Year while the album
overall achieved #139 on Rolling Stone Magazine's
Top 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time.
