In
an interview before the release of their ninth album, Bono said
"Achtung Baby" would be a new taste for U2, and he was
right. What Bono did not realize was how hard it would be to
create such an album, described as "the sound of four men
trying to chop down the Joshua Tree."
Recording began in Berlin among a divided band: half the members,
including Bono, wanted to incorporate newer music styles while
the other half wished to remain faithful to their old music
style. The band members finally compromised by the time they
returned to Dublin to record their album.
Although the musical style of "Achtung Baby" was different
from what U2 fans were used to, it managed to top the
charts in the UK.
The title is German for "careful baby" or "attention baby."
The sound is darker than previous albums, with the songs "So
Cruel," "Acrobat," and "Love is Blindness."
They deal with the themes of hopelessness, violence, and relationships.
