UNICEF
When I was little, my best friend used to carry around a little box on Halloween. I remember bitterly asking her why people gave her money and I only got candy. She explained to me that she was collecting money for UNICEF. UNICEF is a branch of the UN which concentrates on helping children. It is also one of the programs which Eleanor Roosevelt played a role in starting. It, like Eleanor, brings out the best in people. As Rob Willison, a young man who use to collect money for UNICEF on Halloween, said I always felt nervous asking people to donate money to UNICEF on top of giving me candy. Nevertheless, when I saw how willing people were to donate a few cents and how grateful they were to have the ability to help others, I felt good about what I was doing.
Specifically, UNICEF is an organization founded in 1946. Its mission is to protect the rights of children and to allow each child to reach his/her full potential. It is the only UN organization dedicated entirely to children. The purpose of it, according to its mission statement, is to "lighten children's loads through community-based services in primary health care, basic education, and safe water and sanitation in developing countries."
